My Play dough Recipe

I love my play dough recipe! I think its the softest and longest lasting play dough around.

I got the recipe from Danielle at Little Ginger Studio in Sydney. When I was facilitating art play groups at Little Gingers we always had a play dough table set up and more often than not it was the mums & dads sitting there, squishing and squeezing the play dough in their hands. The kids loved it too, but the parents appreciated it more!

The fun thing about play dough is not just playing with it, but making it! My kids love helping mix the ingredients and its a great chance to teach a little colour theory while you’re at it!

“If we put a drop of blue food colouring and a drop of red food colouring in, what colour do you think it will turn when its all smooshed together?”

I’ve experimented with natural colouring as well. Turmeric for yellow, Macha for green. One thing I will never do again is cocoa to make brown. Smells so good its hard to convince the little ones not to take a bite!

We also love to leave it natural and add glitter. Sometimes a few drops of essential oil make it a full sensory experience. Spring time calls for Citrus Bliss!

PLAYDOUGH RECIPE

2 Cups of Flour
2 Tbsp of Coconut Oil (This is the secret to smooth playdough. If you want to be extra, use Grapeseed Oil)
1/2 Cup of Salt
2 Tbsp of Cream of Tartar
1 1/2 Cups of Boiling Water
Optional colouring: Food Dye

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a large bowl add the flour, salt, cream of tartar & coconut oil. This is the part the kids can help with. Mine love the pour!

  2. Add boiling water. Best to not let the kids do this one! This makes the dough really hot.

  3. Mix all ingredients together until they form a dough.

  4. Once its cooled enough let the kids squeeze and squish it until its the perfect play dough consistency.

  5. If you’re going al natural with the colour than you’re done! Add glitter or essential oils if you like.

  6. If you want to make different colours, separate the dough into equal parts and roll into balls. Make an indent in the ball with your finger and add the food colouring. Knead the dough until the dye is all mixed in. The food colouring will stain your hands! (and the counter so put something down. I use a cutting board) My kids love the messy part. If you’re not into you or your children having blue/red/green/purple/whatever colour hands for the day than you can wear gloves or go al natural with it.

  7. Store the playdough in an air tight container and it can last weeks!

  8. Enjoy!
